Frodsham & Helsby Conservative Branches join
The local branches of the Conservative Party in Frodsham and Helsby have joined together as a prelude to the forthcoming elections for the new West Cheshire & Chester Council on 1 May 2008. The new Council will formally take over the work of Vale Royal Borough Council and Cheshire County Council in May 2009 following a transitional year when West Cheshire & Chester Council will operate as a "shadow authority" with the existing Councils.
For us locally this means there will only be 3 Councillors serving all of Frodsham and Helsby on the shadow authority from 2009. The elections in May 2008 will elect 3 Councillors from a super-ward encompassing the whole of Frdsham and Helsby and as such it makes sense that there is one Conservative Party Branch covering this area.
Cllr Andrew Dawson the last Frodsham Branch Chairman commented:
"I am really delighted that this merger has happened. We're far stronger together. I really hope we stay together now - even when the Frodsham and Helsby ward gets divided in 3 for the 2011 elections."
Budget setting at Frodsham Town Council
Why do we have a Town Council? What is it here for? What are its priorities? These are the questions that the Conservative members of the Town Council posed at its budget setting meeting on 14 January 2008. The Labour dominated Town Council proposed a 12% rise in FTC's precept - but were not able to describe what they saw as the Council's priorities notwithstanding the fact that we have the 4th highest crime rate in Vale Royal in the Frodsham North ward (which encompasses FTC's North, East & West) and an area of the Town within the bottom 20% of areas in England in terms of deprivation. Surely these must be priorities for the Council - or they ought to be.
Many of the Cllrs present agreed that there should be a root and branch review of the Council's priorities - but this apparently wasn't the right time. This will be discussed at Cllr Dawson's suggestion at the next meeting.
Cllr Dawson proposed a standstill in the budget compared with last year and a reallocation of monies to support an additional Police Community Support Officer, and to canvass the views of the people of Frodsham - such as whether traffic calming for Fluin Lane (following the tragic accident) should be pursued.
After some jiggery-pokery the Council settled on a budget which would see an increase of only 38p in the year on a Band D property. Cllr Dawson seconded the revised budget noting that as the figure was very close to last year's budget it would be churlish to maintain opposition to it.
Local Government Re-organisation.
On 23 December 2007 the Government announced that local government in Cheshire is to be reorganised. Both the County Council and the 6 District Councils in Cheshire are to be abolished and replaced with two Councils one called West Cheshire & Chester serving the areas currently served by Chester City Council, Ellesmere Port & Neston and Vale Royal. Not surprisingly the other Council for the east of the county will be called East Cheshire!
As a Conservative party we are going through the process of selecting our candidates to stand for the new Council. The new Council will have 3 Councillors serving the Frodsham and Helsby areas. At present we have 7 Councillors serving on the County Council and Vale Royal Borough Council for this area - 6 of which are Conservatives!
I'm not absolutely convinced this reform was necessary - and certainly whoever the 3 Councillors are who ultimately serve Frodsham & Helsby they are going to have much more work to do as individuals.
We'll keep you posted o developments!
